Kurt Vonnegut, born in 1922, attended Cornell University at the age of eighteen. Vonnegut began his college career as a chemistry major but lacked in his studies. He eventually listed into the army only to find himself behind enemy lines. On December 14, 1944, Vonnegut became a German prisoner of war following the infamous Battle of the Bulge. Shortly after, Vonnegut was sent to Dresden and witness the killing of 135,000 civilians in the Dresden fire-bombing. After returning to the United States on May 22, 1945, Vonnegut began his writing career. His famous satirical book, Slaughter House-Five, illustrates the terror of the Dresden bombing and the harms of war.
